Julie R. Ulmet founded The Law Offices of Julie R. Ulmet following fifteen years of leadership roles in state and federal government, where she developed an expertise in advancing workers’ rights and using creative legal strategies to build worker power.
Julie has extensive federal, state, and administrative litigation experience.
Before starting The Law Offices of Julie R. Ulmet, Julie was the Deputy Chief of the Labor Bureau in the New York State Office of the Attorney General where she oversaw enforcement actions protecting workers’ rights under a variety of municipal, state, and federal laws.
In that role, Julie served as lead counsel in the Attorney General’s litigation against Amazon challenging Amazon’s COVID-19 health and safety practices and retaliation against workers who complained about those practices. She successfully defended a federal court challenge to New York State’s historic Farm Laborers Fair Labor Practices Act. Julie also drafted the legislation that now prohibits employers from making immigration-related retaliatory threats to workers. Julie has served as Adjunct Professor at Cardozo School of Law where she taught the Office of the New York Attorney General Social Justice Division Field Clinic from 2018 to 2022.
Prior to joining state government, Julie was formerly a senior field attorney at the National Labor Relations Board in the regional office in Manhattan. There, she served on a national committee that developed new policies for the agency for cases involving undocumented immigrant workers ensuring that the agency could enforce the law and remedy violations in such cases. In 2016, Julie was awarded the NLRB’s prestigious Norton J. Come Award, an annual prize which recognizes a single attorney nationally for legal excellence. She also served as a litigation associate at Morrison & Foerster, LLP, and as a law clerk to the Honorable Bruce J. McGiverin in the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico.
Julie received her J.D. cum laude from New York University School of Law and her B.A. in American Studies summa cum laude from the State University of New York at Geneseo.
